Korean street toast, or 길거리 토스트, is a beloved snack that's both savory and sweet, commonly found at street vendors throughout Korea. This tasty sandwich features crispy toasted bread, a veggie-packed egg omelet, and layers of ham and cheese, all topped with ketchup and mayo. I first tried this toast during a business trip to Seoul for company training. A colleague from another branch introduced it to me, and we enjoyed it as a quick breakfast. This dish is perfect for busy mornings, offering a delicious and satisfying start to the day.
During that trip to Seoul, I vividly remember standing with my colleague at a bustling street vendor. The air was filled with the aroma of freshly toasted bread and sizzling eggs. We grabbed our toasts and took our first bites - the crispy bread, fluffy omelet, and the combination of savory and sweet flavors were simply amazing.
While the traditional recipe includes a sprinkle of sugar for added sweetness, I prefer to skip it for a more savory taste. This dish is not only delicious but also nutritious. The vegetables provide essential vitamins and fiber, and the eggs are a great source of protein. Ham adds a satisfying meaty flavor, making this toast a well-rounded and energizing meal.

for toasting
Instructions
- Prep
the Vegetables: Shred the cabbage, grate the carrot, and finely chop
the spring onions.
- Make
the Omelet: In a bowl, beat the eggs with salt and pepper. Stir in the
cabbage, carrot, and spring onions. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat
and pour in the egg mixture, spreading it evenly. Cook until the omelet is
set and slightly golden on both sides. Remove from the pan and cut into
four portions.
- Toast
the Bread: Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add a small
amount of butter. Place the bread slices in the pan and toast until golden
brown on both sides.
- Slightly
Toast the Ham: In the same pan, add the ham slices and cook for about
1-2 minutes on each side until they are lightly toasted.
- Assemble
the Sandwiches: On two slices of toasted bread, place a portion of the
omelet, followed by four slices of toasted ham, one slice of cheese, and a
drizzle of ketchup and mayonnaise. Top with the remaining bread slices,
toasted side up.
- Serve: Cut the sandwiches in half and serve immediately.
Tips:
- Substitutions:
For a vegetarian version, omit the ham and add more vegetables. For a
gluten-free option, use gluten-free bread.
- Flavor
Variations: While I prefer a savory taste, you can add a sprinkle of
sugar on the omelet for a traditional touch, or spice it up with a dash of
hot sauce.
