Introduction

Tteokbokki, the beloved Korean street food sensation, brings together chewy rice cakes, savory fish cakes, and a spicy, addictive sauce that keeps you coming back for more.

Whether you're craving a fiery Kick or diving into your first taste of Korean cuisine, this dish promises to satisfy your tastebuds with its bold flavors and comforting textures.

It's the perfect blend of texture and flavor that can turn any meal into a festive occasion.

Recipe:

Serving Size: 2-3 servings

Ingredients:

  • 400g (2cups) rice cakes
  • 400-500ml(1.7 – 2.1cups) water
  • 5 slices Korean fish cake
  • 4 stalks spring onions, chopped
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

For the Sauce:

  • 1.5 tablespoons gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean red chili pepper flakes)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/3 tablespoon dashi powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

1.     In a large pan or pot, combine water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, dashi powder, black pepper, rice cakes, and Korean fish cake slices.

2.     Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to ensure the rice cakes and fish cakes are coated evenly with the sauce.

3.     Cook until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, about 8-10 minutes.

4.     Stir in chopped spring onions during the last minute of cooking.

5.   Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds.

Tips for Making Tteokbokki:

  • Substitutes: For a vegetarian version, omit fish cakes or substitute with tofu or mushrooms. Adjust spice levels by reducing or increasing gochugaru and gochujang according to taste.
  • Texture: For a chewier texture, soak rice cakes in cold water for 20-30 minutes before cooking.
  • Customization: Add hard-boiled eggs, ramen noodles, or cheese for a unique twist on this classic dish.

Why This Sauce is the Best Ever:

The Secret to unforgettable tteokbokki lies in the sauce. My recipe combines the perfect blend of gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, and dashi powder, creating a symphony of flavors that enhance chewy rice cakes and fish cakes.
The real Key, however, is the black pepper. It adds a subtle heat and depth that elevates the entire dish, making the sauce not just spicy but a balanced mix of savory, sweet, and just the right amount of peppery kick. This unique combination makes it irresistibly addictive.
