Introduction

If you're looking for a unique and delicious treat, this leaf-shaped sausage bread is sure to impress! Combining soft, fluffy bread with savory sausage, cheese, and a variety of toppings, this bread is a perfect snack or light meal. The eye-catching leaf shape makes it a fun addition to any meal or gathering. Plus, it’s surprisingly easy to make, even if you’re new to bread baking.

Making sausage bread at home always brings a sense of accomplishment, especially when you see the beautiful leaf shape come out of the oven. The first time I tried this recipe, I was amazed at how such simple ingredients could create something so visually stunning and tasty. It's not just the look; the combination of melted cheese, juicy sausage, and the slight crunch of corn and onions makes each bite irresistible.

One of the great things about this sausage bread is that it’s not only delicious but also quite versatile. You can easily adjust the toppings to suit your taste or dietary needs. For instance, if you're a fan of spicy flavors, try adding some chopped jalapeños or a sprinkle of chili flakes. If you're watching your diet, using whole grain flour or reducing the amount of cheese can make this bread a bit healthier without sacrificing flavor.

Sausage Bread Recipe

Serving Size: Makes about 8 leaf-shaped sausage breads.

Ingredients

  • 300g (2 1/2 cups) bread flour
  • 6g (2 tsp) dry yeast
  • 4g (3/4 tsp) salt
  • 35g (3 tbsp) sugar
  • 30g (2 tbsp) butter, softened
  • 140g (2/3 cup) milk
  • 1 egg
  • Toppings:
    • 1/2 onion, diced
    • 1 tbsp mayo
    • Pinch of pepper
    • 2 tbsp canned corn
    • Ketchup (to taste)
    • Mozzarella cheese (to taste)
    • Parsley powder (to taste)
    • 8 sausages (cooked 5 minutes in boiling water)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a bowl, mix the bread flour, dry yeast, salt, and sugar.
    • Add the softened butter, milk, and egg. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
    • Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Toppings:
    • In a small bowl, mix the diced onion with mayo, a bit of pepper, and canned corn.
    • Cook sausages in boiling water for 5 minutes, then set aside.
  3. Shape the Dough:
    • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions (63-65g each).
    • Roll each portion into a ball, then let the gas out by pressing gently.
    • Roll each ball into a long oval shape, place a cooked sausage in the center, fold the dough over the sausage, and seal the edges.
    • Make cuts with scissors about 1-2 cm apart along the sides and twist each section to create a leaf shape.
  4. Second Proofing and Adding Toppings:
    • Let the shaped dough proof a second time until slightly puffed, about 30 minutes.
    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • Add the prepared onion mixture on top of each dough, drizzle with ketchup and mayo, sprinkle mozzarella cheese and parsley powder.
  5. Bake:
    • Place the prepared dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Tips and Substitutes

  • Substitutes: For a vegetarian option, replace the sausage with a vegetarian sausage or a mixture of sautéed mushrooms. If you're lactose intolerant, use dairy-free cheese and butter.
  • Tips: To make sure your bread is extra fluffy, allow the dough to rise properly. Also, don’t overstuff with toppings to ensure even baking.
